5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue,[a] and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. (2 Peter 1:5-7 ESV)
Have you ever been concerned that you did not know how best to build your faith? Today’s scripture provides a recipe for growing our faith, and in truth growing a solid foundation for all aspects of our life.
Virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection and love. Each builds upon the other. Each is entwined with the other. As we build in one area it supports and helps us to build in the others. In this way we are continually building the foundations and framework of our faith and a good life.
There is nothing in this list that does not have a positive impact upon the life we lead. Some who are not “religious” may wish to take godliness out of the mix. But in what way does being more like God not improve our lives. Not being more like God in a worldly sense where we see ourselves as our own personal god. No! But becoming more Christ like. Emulating Christ is, in essence, making every effort to build upon all of these qualities.
