Do The Work

22 Then he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, don’t worry about your life, what you will eat; or about the body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food and the body more than clothing. (Luke 12:22-23 CSB)

Our scripture today can be a hard one to get past. It is difficult to not worry about our needs in this life. Luke goes on to explain that we need not worry because of how much our God loves us and will provide for us. But the last line of today’s scripture is where we need to focus.

Life is more than food and the body more than clothing.

God is letting us in on a little secret. He is not telling us not to work or not to take care of ourselves. No, what He is saying is that we have much bigger things to focus on and if we do the other will take care of itself.

I taught both of my kids to work hard and let the money take care of itself. Meaning, a strong work ethic is its own reward and money is a byproduct. God too is saying “do the work”, His and ours, and everything else will be added to you. If you read all of Luke 12 this theme repeats.

So, yes, do not worry about needs in life. Be about God’s work and our own (which is also God’s work if we do it right) and let go of all the rest. Let it come, do not be anxious and do not be overly expectant in life. Allow it the time and space to unfold and for God to work on our behalf.

God will work out all the rest.
