22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; (Ephesians 4:22-23 NIV)
The old self, the old body, the old mind and old way of thinking. How we were prior to coming to Christ…or is that still our way?
We were meant to be made anew in Christ when we came to faith. Not to remain rooted our old ways, but to dig up those roots and cast them aside. Allowing new roots of who we are in Christ to take hold, grow deep and become strong.
Are we starving the new root by not feeding it with the Living Water? If we continue only in consuming the putrid waters of the world they simply corrupt and strengthen our deceitful desires. However, the Living Water of God’s Word will help His truth grow deeply within us, and from this truth we can renew our minds, renew our lives.
Once we have put off our former way of life a new way of life can begin to unfold. We can begin to see the error of that former life and replace all those bad habits with new and fulfilling habits.
The old self must fall away to make way for something new.
