17 I am oppressed and needy;
may the Lord think of me.
You are my helper and my deliverer;
my God, do not delay. (Psalm 40:17 CSB)
God meets you where you are. No matter what your state, He is waiting for you there and not expecting anything more than our surrendering to Him.
Too often we think we need to “clean up our act” before coming to God. While it is a good idea to get rid of old sinful habits, there is nothing you can do to make yourself “better” for God. We are all but filthy rags and all sin is failure. But Christ sacrifice for us atoned for all sins. Notice that I did not say “all sins great and small”. For sin is sin in God’s eyes. It is only man who puts a size onto sin so that he may pass off the little sins as meaningless. This is not the way with God, no, He see’s sin as sin.
Thus, it is lucky that God meets us where we are, regardless of our state. This is the beauty of God’s mercy, love and free offering of salvation. And at the time of conversion our sins, past, present and future are forgiven. This does not mean we can go on sinning, but that if we slip we are covered by God’s grace.
Do not wait to get right before going to God. Go to God to get right.
